Ich stieg gerade in den Zug von Biel nach Zürich, als ich meinte, einen alten Freund zu erkennen. Ich sah ihn prüfend an. Er sah ihm ähnlich, aber Zeit und Ort verboten es. Ich setzte mich und widmete mich meinem Buch. Nach einer Weile bemerkte ich seinen Blick. Ich sah auf und wir uns an. Er verzog den Mund zu einem Grinsen. Er war es. Ich tastete sein Gesicht ab. Augen, Nase, Kinnpartie. So ähnlich und doch, Wangen, Stirn – ganz anders. Er war es nicht. Er griff zum Telephon, drückte darauf herum, legte es weg, nahm es wieder. Die Gestik, das war er. Ich sah zu ihm herüber, wir uns wieder an, aber seine Augen verrieten nichts. Er hielt ruhig den Blick, bis ich es Leid war und mich abwandte. Ab und zu schaute ich rüber – ich suchte nach Ähnlichkeiten, nach Unterschieden. Wie plausibel war es, daß er es war und wenn er es war, erkannte er mich? Er telephonierte – und was und wie er es sagte war mir unsympathisch und fremd und doch wollte ich mit ihm reden. Ihn fragen – bist Du es? Nach einer Weile schlug ich das Buch zu. Ich war am Ende angelangt und hatte eine einsame Träne im Augenwinkel. Gefühlsduselei. Ich sah zu meinem alten Freund herüber. Er war im Sitz tiefer gerutscht, hatte die Beine gekreuzt und die Augen geschlossen. Sein Telephon ruhte auf seinem Schoß. Ich tat es ihm gleich und schloß die Augen. Später, als ich wieder hinsah, reckte er sich, wie Katzen das tun.
Als wir in Zürich ausstiegen, standen wir uns einen kurzen Moment gegenüber. Er lächelte, ich lächelte. Und dann war er weg.
